Honouring a Hero: The Farewell of Tony John, A Veteran Paratrooper

The late Tony John, a proud veteran of the 2nd and 10th Battalions of The Parachute Regiment, was taken from us far too soon by an incurable cancer. A seasoned soldier with distinguished service in Northern Ireland, Tony’s legacy is one of courage and dedication.

To honour his extraordinary life, a deeply personal and symbolic funeral was organised. A bugler from the Guards was joined by another from the Parachute Regiment, reflecting the deep respect and camaraderie Tony inspired among his peers. His coffin was draped with a Union flag, accompanied by a 2nd Battalion Parachute Regiment flag, and adorned with poignant tributes such as his boots, beret, and medals.

Adding to the powerful tribute, three standard bearers from the Parachute Regiment Association stood in honour, exemplifying the enduring bonds of the regiment. In a fitting nod to Tony’s military career, we arranged specialist vehicles that carried profound significance. An ex-Army Land Rover adapted to serve as a hearse, and a trailer that had seen four tours in Northern Ireland—including battle damage during the Bloody Sunday troubles—bore him on his final journey. Additionally, an ex-Royal Military Police Land Rover served as an escort, completing this moving display of military respect.

This farewell, steeped in symbolism and heartfelt homage, was a testament to Tony’s service and the impact he had on those who knew him. It was a privilege to ensure that his final journey was a reflection of his remarkable life and military career.
