Honouring a Hero: The Farewell of Royal Air Force Veteran Dennis Wheeler

The funeral of Royal Air Force Veteran Dennis Wheeler was a poignant and remarkable event. Dennis, who sadly passed away without any immediate family, was supported by friends from the Union Jack Club in Waterloo, London – a club dedicated to veterans of all Armed Forces. A GoFundMe campaign initiated by his friends raised enough funds to provide Dennis with a dignified and exceptional service.

The funeral took place at St Clement Danes, the Royal Air Force church in the City of London. The service was led by the RAF padre, with ceremonial support from the King’s Colour Squadron of the Royal Air Force Regiment. Including airmen serving as bearers, a guard of honour, and ceremonial door openers. The service also featured the playing of the Last Post by a Royal Air Force bugler.

Distinguished guests included the Deputy Lord Mayor of Westminster, and a message from Jonny Mercer, Minister of State for Veterans’ Affairs, was read during the service.

This funeral, the most military-focused ceremony we have conducted to date, demonstrated the strength of the community and respect for those who served. It also led to new connections within the RAF, including the RAF padre and the Wing Commander overseeing ceremonial affairs, who expressed their admiration for the arrangements.

Dennis’s funeral stands as a testament to the dedication and care shown to honour veterans and ensure their contributions are remembered with the respect they deserve.
