Herbert was a Normandy veteran. Herbert joined the Territorial Army before the war and was conscripted in 1939. He was initially sent to Scotland and then was waiting for the big day, 6th June 1944.
Herbert’s landing ship had mechanical problems so he was delayed with his troop and set foot on French sand two days late. Had the ship been fit and well there was a strong chance Herbert would not be here today. Herbert’s war took him through France, Belgium, Holland and Germany, he was demobbed in 1946.
Herbert met the Queen Mother and Prince Phillip and then toured German schools talking about the war. Present at his funeral were the Standards of the Royal British legion and the Normandy association along with Colonel McRobbie. His coffin was draped in the union flag.
